Although we recommend a bike trip as the best way to see a decent variety of the countryside in a short time, if you have longer then a hike can be an equally valuable experience. For a start, it is easier to stop and start whenever - and much easier to talk together along the way. Here's a real opportunity to ask your guide about every little detail of life in China.
What you should bring:
This route crosses the Li River by local ferry three times. We hike through some of the most impressive Karst scenery of all, ending at the viewpoint chosen for the picture on the back of the 20 Yuan note.
We can walk several sections of the Yulong River - as far as suits your fitness, interests and schedule. There are interesting villages along the way, and fantastic scenery without end.
Longsheng is famous for its Rice Terraces. Many visitors walk up to the viewing spots on the ridge but no further. The area offers some outstanding hikes and we can arrange day trips or longer to suit all tastes.
Chengyang is home to the Dong Minority people. Certainly the village is worth a visit with its ancient Drum Tower and Wind and Rain Bridge but to jutify the travel time it would be better to stay longer and hike around the nearby villages too.

We had the opportunity to send three days in Yangshuo. During two of these days we made a tour through the countryside: one per bicycle and bamboo raft, the other by motorbike. Lisa showed us many nice places, nice views [...] it has given us a nice impression of the area and a very pleasant memory of our trip to Guilin/Yangshuo.

Thanks. We had two wonderful days - on the river and on bikes. Having Lisa as our guide was wonderful as well. She was enthusiastic and made the trip enjoyable for all of us. Having an English-speaking guide makes all the difference - as we were able to understand much more.

Li River Cruises: Low Water Warning
Zhang Faye, 28 March, 2010
Guangxi is part of the drought-stricken area of south-west China which is currently a top news item nationally.
At the moment the Li River water is very low, so the cruise boats can't start from Guilin nor finish in Yangshuo. Until normal water levels return, the cruises will start from Yangti and finish in Xingping.
